Most children get excited at the thought of starting kindergarten. While it can be a fun and new experience for parent and child, it is a big step in a child’s life that calls for preparation.
“Parents can do a lot to get their children ready for school by talking about it in a positive way,” said Kay Guy, a reading specialist for a California school district. “The biggest challenges seem to be for children who have not learned to be away from their parents or relate well to other children.”

Back to School often means cleaning out the closet to make room for all those new clothes and shopping for new school supplies. Make this an opportunity to share your values with your kids.

Share Your Stuff: An Exercise for Back To School
In PiedmontParent.com's online exclusive, Stacey Libbert shares her experience in cleaning out her daughter's closet and how it inspired them to make a trip to the local homeless shelter. Back to school time is a great opportunity to get kids involved in community service. Here are a few ways you can help:
Staples and Do Something.org
These two organizations have teamed up to collect school supplies for kids in need. All you have to do is donate some supplies in the collection bin at any Staples store, through Aug. 31.
Bright Beginnings
Take a backpack full of stuff to your YMCA in Greensboro, August 11-13.
Donate to the Teacher Warehouse
We all know teachers don't get enough stuff just from the school system. Help them get the supplies and art projects they need to get our kids creative by donating to the teacher warehouse.
Give a Kid a Coat
It hasn't started yet, but don't toss those old coats. Every year this project with Fox 8 and A Cleaner World is a great way to recycle coats and keep kids warm.

We've got a new photo gallery added to our site, and we want the first opportunity to use it to be your child's back-to-school photo! You know you take a picture of them before they get on the bus or as you drop them off that first day, all spiffy in their brand new clothes, or SMOD as the case may be! Email us your picture to become part of our Back to School Photo Gallery!
