Pick Your Own Berries: It’s a Family Adventure

Published:

Are you looking for a little adventure this spring and summer? Or maybe just craving the fresh, delicious taste of fruit picked right off the bush? Most of us don't grow our own food anymore, but thanks to the rise in agri-tourism, there are plenty of places around the Carolinas that offer fresh produce right on the farm, and many of them allow you to bring the family and pick your own.

The benefits of taking your kids out for a day at the farm are endless. Not only will they get off the couch and get out in the sun for a while, they'll also learn a little bit about where our food comes from, you'll be supporting local growers, the produce you get is guaranteed fresh and often organic, and with food prices soaring, who can discount the benefit of a $6 gallon of blueberries where you've eliminated the middleman?

We've compiled a list of places to pick your own produce, as well as farmer's markets and produce stands where they've done the picking for you. Just keep in mind a few things before you pile in the car:

* Call ahead to make sure there's produce that day and the stand is open.
* Plan to visit early in the morning. Not only will you have the best pickings then, you don't want to be working hard in the hot mid-day sun.
* Wear appropriate clothing and a hat if you choose. And of course, sunscreen!
