RiverRun International Film Festival recently announced the launch of a film series entitled RiverRun Retro. This new series will be a year-round initiative of RiverRun International Film Festival. The series will spotlight individuals and films that have contributed to the cultural and commercial fabric of motion pictures.

The inaugural "RiverRun Retro: An Evening with Millie Perkins" event will take place Nov. 4 at Hanesbrands Theatre, with special guest Millie Perkins in an on-stage interview by Foster Hirsch. The program will show clips of Perkins’ extensive acting career, focusing primarily on her role of Anne Frank in “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Mooney’s Mediterranean Café will cater light hors d’oeuvres for the post-program reception with Perkins. Beer from Hoots Beer Co. and wine from McRitchie Winery will also be available at the event.

The RiverRun Retro program is the brainchild of Rob Davis, the new executive director of RiverRun. Davis brings vast experience with the genre of classic Hollywood film to his new post in Winston-Salem.

“With film, as with other art forms and industries, to understand where we are and where we may be headed, we need to understand where we have been,” says Davis.

By bringing in special guests to discuss their careers, RiverRun Retro will pay tribute to those who have influenced the medium, and audiences will be exposed to the fascinating history and backstory of the art form as a supplement to RiverRun International Film Festival, which takes place annually in April.

Millie Perkins is a film and television actress best known for her film debut as Anne Frank in George Stevens’ production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” (20th Century-Fox, 1959). Subsequently, Perkins was placed under contract to Fox, but it was a tumultuous relationship with Perkins being suspended for refusing to appear in “Tess of the Storm Country.” After appearing as Elvis Presley’s girlfriend in “Wild in the Country,” Perkins left Fox to appear in “Ensign Pulver” and Jack Nicholson’s existential Westerns, “The Shooting” and “Ride in the Whirlwind.”

More recently, Perkins has appeared as Jon Voight’s ex-wife in “Table for Five,” Sean Penn’s mother in “At Close Range,” Charlie Sheen’s mother in “Wall Street,” Andy Garcia’s mother in “The Lost City,” and as Ruth Kramer in the film adaptation of John Grisham’s “The Chamber.“

Foster Hirsch, the evening’s moderator, is a film professor at Brooklyn College and the author of 16 books on film and theater, including his highly acclaimed biography of Otto Preminger. Hirsch has hosted programs for the American Film Institute, the American Cinematheque, Film Forum, the National Arts Club, and many film festivals around the country and abroad.

General admission for this event is $15 for adults and $10 for children and students (with valid student ID). Tickets are available online through

Now in its 19th year, RiverRun International Film Festival will run March 30–April 9, 2017, in downtown Winston-Salem. To become a member and view more information about the Festival, visit
