A Piedmont Triad Summer Weekend Packed with Family Fun

This weekend, families can tour Old Salem for free in celebration of its 250th anniversary or pack a picnic and relax at an outdoor summer concert or movie. There are plays and fair and National Bowling Day falls on this weekend, as well. So check out our top picks for 11 opportunities to make memories with the kids this weekend.

"A.E.S.O.P.," Winston-Salem

This amazing world premiere show features music from the 1920’s through the 1980’s in a jukebox style performance, with the moral stories of Aesop’s Fables throughout the show. Don’t miss a high energy great time.

Art Splash Summer Concert Series, High Point

This season’s line up includes artists highlighting various genres of music: Motown, Soul, Folk, Blues, Latin, and Bluegrass. There is truly something for everyone. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic dinners. Tonight: Dom Flemons.

Back 2 School Fair, High Point

Laurel Oak Christian Church will be giving out bag packs, providing free haircuts, snow cones, popcorn and clothes. There will be face painting for kids and a lots of fun activities, like a bounce house and games.

Cinema Under the Stars, Winston-Salem

Gates open at 7:30 p.m., and the film will be shown on the front lawn at dark. In case of rain, the film will be shown in the museum’s Babcock Auditorium. Filmgoers are encouraged to arrive early and picnic on the lawn and to participate in nightly themes inspired by the films. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase; no outside alcohol is permitted. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Tonight's feature movie is "Labyrinth" (1986) Come as your favorite incarnation of the much-missed David Bowie. 

Community Day, Winston-Salem

Enjoy all of the exhibits, demonstrations and more provided by Old Salem Museums & Gardens free of charge all day long in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of Old Salem.

Illuminate Salem, Winston-Salem

In celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of Salem, NC, enjoy a concert each night on Salem Square followed by a magical light show that tells the story of Salem. Bring your family and a picnic blanket and experience the story of Salem in a most unique way. This event is free and open to the public. 

Kickoff to Kindergarten & Bike Safety Day, Winston-Salem

Special activities especially for rising kindergartners as well as bike safety activities. Activities are included with admission. All rising kindergartners are admitted free. 

MUSEP Concert Series 2016, Greensboro

Tonight's music provided by The Sonic Prophets, playing blues rock selections at 6 p.m. and doby, playing funk selections at 7:15 p.m.

National Bowling Day, High Point

The High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau (HPCVB) will celebrate National Bowling Day at its upcoming Prime Time on Main Series. Partnering with High Point Bowling, visitors and residents alike can partake in bowling, inside the Regional Visitors Center, using portable bowling kits that include carpeted lanes and rubber bowling balls. 

ReptiDay Winston-Salem Reptile & Exotic Animal Expo, Winston-Salem

A one-day reptile event featuring vendors offering reptile pets, supplies, feeders, cages and merchandise as well as live animal seminars and frequent free raffles for coveted prizes. Exciting, educational, family-oriented fun for everyone. Children under 5 years old admitted free.

"The Tourist Trap," Winston-Salem

When Rose and Euguene Wayward find themselves stranded with a broken down car on the way to their granddaughter’s wedding, they discover an unbelievable adventure lying just around the bend. The Steppup Family, a band of bluegrass-playing puppets, welcome the travelers to their struggling roadside attraction, where through song and story, the Waywards discover the incredible potential of family, no matter what size, shape or color it may come in.
