A visit to the farm includes a tour of a 20’x48’ flight house filled with Monarch butterflies that are busy nectaring on plants and feeders, and breeding and laying eggs on host plants in the house. A beautiful fountain offers a serene, relaxing atmosphere. Visitors will be directed to each stage of the lifecycle, from egg to caterpillar and will be able to observe butterflies up close. Monarchs are very friendly – don’t be surprised if they land on your shoulder, especially if you are wearing bright clothing. You can also feed the butterflies by hand. Picnic tables are available and a misting tent is available during the warm summer months to keep our visitors cool.

The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is the last original covered bridge constructed in North Carolina. Dating back to 1898, the Bunker Hill Bridge is a National Engineering Landmark. The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum is North Carolina’s first official state historic site to honor an African-American and a woman. The site is the location of the former Palmer Memorial Institute, an African-American preparatory school established by Brown in 1902. Beginning as a primarily agricultural and industrial school, PMI evolved into an elite preparatory school equipping its students with a classical education, discipline, high standards, poise and ambition. The school closed in 1971. The historic site opened to the public in 1987.

Discovery Place is a paradise of kid-friendly science exhibits and presentations. The park is home to two disc golf courses, individual and group picnic sites, a playground, a fishing pond stocked with channel catfish, several walking trails, mountain biking trails and a historical farm, which shows life on a farm in North Carolina during the 19th century. The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum is North Carolina’s first official state historic site to honor an African-American and a woman. The site is the location of the former Palmer Memorial Institute, an African-American preparatory school established by Brown in 1902. Beginning as a primarily agricultural and industrial school, PMI evolved into an elite preparatory school equipping its students with a classical education, discipline, high standards, poise and ambition. The school closed in 1971. The historic site opened to the public in 1987.

Discovery Place is a paradise of kid-friendly science exhibits and presentations. The museum’s “Discovery Halls” are lined with seasonal attractions such as “Circus,” permanent exhibits like the aquarium, the stuffed and mounted North American animal collection, an amateur radio education center and the machine shop where kids can learn how planes work. The museum also offers a number of live programs and demonstrations, such as aquarium feedings or experience a rainforest animal encounter. There is also The Charlotte Observer IMAX® Dome featuring the largest screen in the Carolina’s, standing three-stories-high and 80-feet wide and showing various full-length and Discovery films throughout the year.
