Piedmont Parent Calendar Highlights for September

The first of school signals the start of fall, and what could be more fall-like than a fair and an apple festival? Enjoy some of the fun fall activities going on around the Triad, include the Central Carolina Fair, the Apple Fest at Bethabara Park and Snaketacular at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro.

Central Carolina Fair

central carolina fairLooking for some good, old-fashioned family fun? Thake your kids to the fair! Now in its 112th consecutive year, the Central Carolina Fair features spectacular rides, food and games, thousands of exhibits by local 4H groups, and wholesome family entertainment and attractions for all ages. Admission is $5 for adults; children ages 10 and under get in free. Single rides are $1.25, and unlimited ride wristbands are available for $20 for adults and $15 for children 10 and under.

Central Carolina Fair dates and times are: Friday, Sept. 10 from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 12 from 1 to 11 p.m.; Monday-Friday, Sept. 13-17 from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 6 p.m.

snaketacularCome celebrate the reptile world at this exciting annual event at the Natural Science Center. You can see Ron Key’s collection of rattlesnakes and other pit vipers such as copperheads and cottonmouths, and check out Alan McLeod’s 15-foot albino python. Get nose-to-nose with local nonvenomous snakes, witness the weighing/measuring of Bertha, a giant Burmese python, and enjoy face-painting and snake crafts. All activities are free with regular museum admission. Adults, $8; ages 3-13, $7; ages 2 and under, free.

Apple Fest

Come celebrate the harvest at Apple Fest on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Historic Bethabara Park. Apple Fest is a tribute to the Moravian way of life with unique crafts, traditional music and food. Local orchards, handicraft demonstrations and colonial re-enactors highlight the festival, as do horse-drawn wagon rides and colonial games. The festival begins at 10:30 a.m. and lasts until 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. Historic Bethabara Park is at 2147 Bethabara Road in Winston-Salem.

 

All-a-Flutter Family Days

all-a-flutter butterfly farmAll-a-Flutter Butterfly Farm is holding Family Days every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 9. All ages can experience the magic of hand-feeding a monarch butterfly with a one-hour-and-15-minute tour of the butterfly house and presentation. No reservations are necessary. There are two showings on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and one showing Sunday at 2 p.m. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to get a parking space and a good seat.
